First North American Stage Adaptation of "Near to the Wild Heart" by Clarice Lispector - New Stage Performance Space
Through January 18, 2019 - Manhattan

Ildiko Nemeth, Artistic Director of New Stage Theatre Company, is bringing her signature blend of multimedia, inventive choreography and striking visual design to the first English-language stage adaptation of "Near to the Wild Heart," the modernist masterpiece by Clarice Lispector (1920-1977). The Brazilian-Jewish novelist is now the object of a long-overdue surge of worldwide literary popularity. "Near to the Wild Heart" (1943), her sensational debut novel, is the story of a woman trapped in a passionless marriage. Rather than a conventional plot, it offers us a woman's inner life that is as clear and lustrous as any in world literature. Nemeth adapts "Near to the Wild Heart" into a multimedia theatre piece that evokes a rich, expansive female interior as it dramatizes the life and passions of the book's heroine. Her playscript employs verbatim excerpts of Alison Entrekin's faithful translation to reflect--as much as possible--the novel's unique voice and literary effect. The book has been adapted to the stage only twice before and both times in French: in Paris in 2007 and in Belgium in 2008.

Saint Vitus Presents Batushka - Gramercy Theatre
December 03, 2019 - New York

Age Restriction: 16+ Unless Accompanied by a GuardianAs civilisation continues to eat itself, heavy music's dark spiritual quest has never seemed more vital. Emerging from the shadows of eastern Poland back in 2015, Batushka have already established themselves as one of the modern era's most powerful and evocative bands. Harnessing the fire and fury of arcane black metal and channelling it through the reverberant grandeur of ancient rituals of worship, the band's debut album Litourgiya stood apart from the extreme metal hordes: a monument to originality, depth and dark mysticism that swiftly cast its spell over the metal underground and beyond.

Harlem Jazz Series - Tony Lewis Trio - Greater Calvary Baptist Church
December 03, 2019 - New York

Tony Lewis is a drummer/songwriter from the South Bronx, New York who has worked with a variety of stellar artists including Little Richard, Sting, Cyndi Lauper, Rakim, Sam Moore (Sam and Dave), Michael Hill's Blues Mob, and Craig Harris.'My defining moment in choosing to play the drums came from watching cats and listening. My dad, who used to play himself, was always bringing home Down Beat magazine so I would look at all the drum ads with Max Roach, Louie Bellson and Ed Shaughnessy of the Tonight Show band fame, Bernard Purdie, Jack DeJohnette, and Billy Cobham. One particular visual for me was watching the movie "The Glenn Miller Story" with James Stewart from 1954. There's a scene where he's performing (or acting like he is) in a little club jammin' with Louis Armstrong. In the club there's another drummer, the great Cozy Cole playing. Another drumming legend Gene Krupa, who played with Miller in real life happens to be in the club. So, the two start playing together on the same kit. While Cozy is sitting down on his own kit, Gene stands next to him playing his floor toms. The way these two got on while playing and created such a lovely little melody/groove on the kit, I w... Shannon Mattern: Urban Algorithms - The Cooper Union, 41 Cooper Square
December 03, 2019 - New York

Human bodies often render their internal operations audible, and for centuries healers have used auscultation the practice of listening to the body, typically aided by gadgets and machines to assess the body's health and diagnose ailments. Cities, likewise, have lent themselves to sonic analysis, and they've been likened to both bodies and machines. This talk examines how methods of urban listening, through human and machinic ears, have "sounded out" the city as an organic or machinic body and how new artificially intelligent ears are "scoring" the city in accordance with their own computational logic.

Diaspora - Parasol Projects 498 Broome Street
December 05, 2019 - New York

Being a resident of a foreign country opens up a person's mind to new realities like very few other experiences can. As a stranger in a strange land, one is forced to come to terms with how indifferent the cosmos is to one's identity and that if one is to survive let alone thrive, a process of assimilation has to occur. As a result, one has to find a new identity that allows one to live at least marginally in one's new home.At this charity event, through panel discussion and interactive exhibition, we explore what this identity looks like for Africans living in the U.S. through the eyes of both Africans and Americans. More specifically, we will be discussing the following:

The Drawing Center hosts a reprised selection from the Ohio Innocence Project's Blind Injustice opera, premiered with Cincinnati Opera in 2019, followed by a conversation with opera subject Exoneree Nancy Smith and Director of the Ohio Innocence Project, Mark Godsey, along with the NYC Innocence Project's Senior Staff Attorney, Nina Morrison. This program is produced in partnership with the American Folk Art Museum.Nancy Smith was a single mother of four and a Head Start school bus driving when she was falsely accused of picking up young preschool students and molesting them at her "boyfriend's house, " where they were allegedly molested all day, instead of driving them to school. Nancy's case represents one of the worst cases of ineffective representation in the annuls of wrongful conviction cases. Attendance records showed the children were at school and arrived on time on the day of the alleged molestati... (read more)

ACTOR/SINGER SCOTT RANERI PRESENTS NEW YORK SOLO CABARET DEBUT SHOWTHE MARVELOUS MR. MARZOFOUR-SHOW RUN BEGINS AT DONT TELL MAMA ON OCTOBER 14 AT 7 PM When Actor/Singer Scott Raneri was pondering a theme for his New York Solo Cabaret Debut Show, he decided to go back to his rootsliterally. Last December, Raneri registered to take a DNA test with the ubiquitous genetic testing company 23andMe. Raneri wanted to learn more about his ancestry and his health profile. When he found he was a genetic match with a cousin he didnt know he had, that led to a more startling discoverythat his grandfather was NOT the man who was married to his grandmother, but was a family friend named Butch Marzo. Hence, the shows title. Ive wanted to create a solo cabaret show for years, but I didnt want it to be a show about my love life or a tribute to a singer, Raneri says. I wanted to develop a show based on a really original idea. When I took that DNA test, I never thought that family secrets taken to the grave would be revealed though science and it would end up being the catalyst for a show. Once I discovered the truth about my grandmothers husbands and lovers, I knew this was... (read more)

EN Jewelry Trunk Show at 180 The Store - 180 The Store
December 07, 2019 - New York

180 The Store will be hosting a trunk show for New York-based jewelry brand En Jewelry!Founded by friends Malu Byrne and Rick Van Steain Low, the collection includes rainbow-hued gold jewelry that encompasses a playful yet minimalist essence. Prior to starting the brand, both artists worked under other jewelers -- Malu worked with Gabriella Kiss, and Rick with Robin Renzi of Me & Ro. The two designers crossed paths nearly 10 years ago, at a coffee shop, bonding over Baroque art and marble statues. When Byrne began creating her own designs of sculptural jewels made of glass, Rick Van stepped in to cast the jewels into precious metals-- and the brand was created. When deciding on a name, the pair landed on En -- the Japanese word for together. We will be showcasing their debut collection and never seen before holiday pieces during the trunk show. Both Malu and Rick will be in attendance and available for any questions about the brand or collections! Our assortment will include a range of rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings in precious stones at affordable prices.

When I Wanted Everything: New Work by Alex Sewell - TOTAH Gallery
Through December 18, 2019 - New York

TOTAH Gallery on the Lower East Side presents When I Wanted Everything, an exhibition of new works by Alex Sewell, opening October 24th, from 6-8pm, on view through December 18th. The images populating Alex Sewells paintings archive an ongoing dialectic between the artists personal memory and the collective identity of the American psyche. A restive sense of melancholy threads through each work on exhibit using a disarmingly personable tone. Sewell meticulously destabilizes all-too-familiar vistas of American suburbia, imposing a translucent scrim of violence onto objects ordinarily earmarked for passive consumption. Video games, television, toys of every kind become eerily macabre, giving the lie to the placid everydayness of his themes.

PAPER BORDERS - International Print Center New York

Using the materiality of print and handmade paper, the two- and three-dimensional works in this exhibition speak to cross-cultural and deeply embedded global struggles. Here, the precarity of paper becomes a metaphor for the precarity of place.

Reluctantly coaxed out of retirement, Verdi composed what would become the crowning achievements of his career: Otello, premiered in 1887 and Falstaff, in 1893. This exhibition, based on The Enterprise of Opera - Verdi, Boito, Ricordi created by Bertelsmann/Ricordi and curated by Gabriele Dotto is the first in the United States to present rare documents and artifacts from Milan's Ricordi Archive and will offer visitors insight into the production of these two operas as well as the complex enterprise of bringing an opera to life. Set designs, costumes from Milan's Teatro alla Scala, autograph manuscripts, contracts, publications, publicity, video excerpts from recent productions, and other objects in many media will permit visitors to experience the tremendous collaborative efforts behind an operatic production.

John Singer Sargent: Portraits in Charcoal - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through January 12, 2020 - Manhattan

John Singer Sargent (18561925) was one of the greatest portrait artists of his time. While he is best known for his powerful paintings, he largely ceased painting portraits in 1907 and turned instead to charcoal drawings to satisfy portrait commissions. These drawn portraits represent a substantial, yet often overlooked, part of his practice, and they demonstrate the same sense of immediacy, psychological sensitivity, and mastery of chiaroscuro that animate Sargent's sitters on canvas. The first major exhibition to explore the artist's expressive portraits in charcoal, John Singer Sargent: Portraits in Charcoal will recognize the sheer scale of Sargent's achievement as a portrait draftsman. Important international loans, from both public and private collections, will showcase Sargent's sitters, many of them famous for their roles in politics, society, and the arts. The exhibition will also explore the friendships and the networks of patronage that underpinned Sargent's practice as a portrait draftsman in Edwardian Britain and Progressive Era America.

Guercino: Virtuoso Draftsman - The Morgan Library & Museum
Through February 02, 2020 - Manhattan

Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino (15911666), was arguably the most interesting and diverse draftsman of the Italian Baroque era, a natural virtuoso who created brilliant drawings in a broad range of media. The Morgan owns more than twenty-five works by the artist, and these are the subject of a focused exhibition, supplemented by a handful of loans from public and private New York collections, to be held at the Morgan in the autumn of 2019. The exhibition will include sheets from all moments of the artist's career. His early awareness of the work of the Carracci in Bologna is documented by figures drawn from everyday life as well as brilliant caricatures; two drawings for Guercino's own drawing manual are further testament to his interest in questions of academic practice. Following his career, a range of preparatory drawings includes studies made in connection with his earliest altarpieces as well as his mature masterpieces, including multiple studies for several projects, allowing the visitor to see Guercino's mind at work as he reconsidered his ideas. The Morgan's holdings also include studies for engravings, as well as highly finished landscape and figure drawing... (read more)

The dramatic transformations of the Kardashian family 12 years since the launch of their reality show – from K - The Sun

Posted: 01 Apr 2019 12:00 AM PDT

WE HAVE been keeping up with the Kardashians for over a decade now with the sixteenth series of the show kicking off in the States last night.

And it's fair to say that the world's most talked about family has come a long way since they first hit our screens back in 2007. Here we take a look at how they've changed.

Kim

Kim Kardashian is no longer best known for being Paris Hilton's bff

Kim Kardashian is no longer best known for being Paris Hilton's bff

Easily the most famous member of the 'klan', Kim Kardashian used to be best known as Paris Hilton's bff.

She has since abandoned her penchant for hoop earrings and halter-necks for more daring fashion pieces, most notably skin tight PVC.

She became the poster girl for contouring, with her sheeny lipgloss days now well and truly behind her.

The most dramatic change of course is the fact the Kim went from a Kardashian to a Kardashian-West when she married Kanye in 2014.

She is now mum to North, five, Saint, three and Chicago, 14 months and has a fourth baby on the way via surrogate.

Kourtney

Kourtney has had three children and gone through a rocky break-up but doesn't appear to have aged a day

Like Kim, Kourtney was a fan of the halter neck top and hooped earrings combo and has followed suit with a far sleeker style.

The first series of the reality show saw a 27-year-old Kourtney introducing her then 24-yer-old boyfriend Scott Disick.

The couple went on to have three children together but later split amid cheating allegations in 2017.

And despite the turbulent end to the relationship, the former couple have remained friends for the sake of their children.

Meanwhile the mum-of-three, 39, barely seems to have aged a day.

Religiously sticking to an organic diet has enabled the star to keep her figure trim, although she has admitted to having breast enhancement surgery.

Khloe

Khloe has since become a mother, as well as undergoing a dramatic weight loss

Khloe has since become a mother, as well as undergoing a dramatic weight loss

Khloe, 34, was a fresh-faced 22 when the pilot episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians aired.

Since then she has gone through an incredible weight loss transformation, working out up to five times a week.

Since shedding the pounds, Khloe regularly flaunts her enviable figure in revealing outfits.

It has been a somewhat challenging year for the star who split from Tristan Thompson, the father of her daughter True, after he cheated on her with Kylie Jenner's former best friend Jordyn Woods.

However, Khloe has come away with her head held high thanks to the support of the Kardashian klan.

Kendall

Kendall has gone from a fresh-faced teen to one of the highest paid models in the fashion industry

Kendall has gone from a fresh-faced teen to one of the highest paid models in the fashion industry

Fresh-faced Kendall  was just 13 when she first appeared in KUWTK.

It didn't take long for the pretty teen to land herself a modelling contract, where she's raked in the cash by collaborating with a number of different high-end brands and companies.

After being voted by GQ as the "coolest person in the world" in 2015, stylish Kendall has taken the fashion industry by storm.

According to Forbes, she was one of the highest paid models in the world in 2016, earning upwards of $7million thanks to her work with brands including Victoria's Secret, Chanel and Calvin Klein.

However, her modelling career famously landed her in hot water in 2017 when she starred in a £40 million Pepsi advert which was described as "tasteless" and "tone deaf" as it piggy backed on the Black Lives Matter and the Women's March to flog fizzy drinks.

The ad was pulled almost immediately and Kendall admitted she "felt bad" about the fiasco in an episode of KUWTK.

Kylie

She was only nine when she first appeared on KUWTK but Kylie has since become the world's youngest billionaire

She was only nine when she first appeared on KUWTK but Kylie has since become the world's youngest billionaire

The family's youngest daughter, who was just 9 when she first appeared on the show, Kylie has become known for her social media presence.

She has become a make-up mogul since she launched her own make-up brand, Kylie Cosmetics, and last year was named the youngest self-made billionaire of all time.

Despite her drastic change in appearance, she has only ever admitted to having lip fillers, and was forced to furiously deny she had cheek or jaw surgery, bum implants or a boob job in October 2016.

Two years later she revealed that she'd had her lip fillers removed sharing a snap of her new pout captioning it "I got rid of all my filler" but admitted in a later Instagram story that she had them "touched up".

Kylie also became a mother for the first time last year when she and Travis Scott welcomed Stormi Webster in February.

Kris

Kris has maintained her success as a 'momager' throughout the series

Kris has maintained her success as a 'momager' throughout the series

Momager Kris Jenner has put her name to a number of exciting projects.

Not only does she have her own talk show, she's also released her own cookbooks and QVC fashion collection since the success of the show.

She is also still in charge of all of her children's careers, which has helped her build a £45 million fortune.

She is now a grandmother-of-nine, but at the age of 63, she hardly looks old enough to have six grown up children.

Elsewhere, we applaud the stars who prove age is no barrier to turning heads following latex-clad Jennifer Aniston's jaw-dropping fashion shoot age 50.

Plus, see Liz Hurley wearing a cutaway safety pin gown 25 years after wearing the original - and she still looks sizzling.
