Any pop enthusiast will applaud “Potential Breakup Song” as one of the best genre offerings of the 00s. “Chemicals React” and “Rush” follow closely behind. Now, the former Disney starlets responsible for those ever-lasting gems have made an unexpected return following a four-year hiatus.
Aly & AJ, thankfully using their original name after a brief change to compliment a folk-pop project, surprise-released the 80s-influenced “Take Me” to the masses this morning and instant nostalgia set in. Incorporating dreamy synths and electronic beats throughout, the new effort represents yet another successful reinvention for the sister duo as they wonder why a potential suitor is taking so long to make the first move.
However, the sisters only contemplate the suitor’s hesitancy for a brief minute, quickly admitting they indeed have better things to do with their day. That busy schedule confession fits in perfectly with the structure and progression of “Take Me”, a song that comes and goes in just three minutes. Though the production lures listeners into its clutches with the first few notes, the chorus explodes when it needs to, and the vocals are energetic, ultimately the release is a simplistic affair.
In a playful yet straightforward tone, Aly & AJ are throwing hints left and right that they’d be ready to light the relationship fuse if the future lover would take a bit of initiative. “I've been spending my attention on you, I don't wait long cause I got better things to do, when you gonna take me out?,” they holler on the catchy chorus, one that would fit in nicely on a soundtrack for the single lover’s guide to navigating the approaching summer.
“Take Me” has an evident throwback vibe, likely inspired by the sisters’ constant viewing of 80s teenage romance films in their younger years. Again, though the artists might seem quick to brush off one’s advances, they sound to be doing so with a huge smile on their face and without a care in the world. That optimistic approach, the idea of there be plenty of fish in the sea, allows the song to carry an empowering message of strength and independence. They don’t really need a man.
Most of the mainstream radio-consuming public likely have not heard the artists or their vocal abilities since 2008. Busy with respective television and film projects, it’s nice to hear Aly & AJ putting thought and time into their recording career. “Take Me” is a solid comeback offering, hopefully hinting at the overall sound of a future full length project. As we soak in the 80s electro-synth goodness, can we all just be glad the girls have made their grand return?
While you're at it, relive the greatness of "Potential Breakup Song"... you're very welcome.
